There are two kinds of barium chrome yellow, one is barium chromate [CaCrO4], and the other is barium potassium chromate, which is a compound salt of barium chromate and potassium chromate. The chemical formula is BaK2(CrO4)2 or BaCrO4·K2CrO4. Chromium Barium Oxide is a cream-yellow powder, soluble in hydrochloric acid and nitric acid, with extremely low tinting strength. The international standard code for barium chromate is ISO-2068-1972, which requires that the content of barium oxide is not less than 56% and the content of chromium trioxide is not less than 36.5%. Barium potassium chromate is lemon-yellow powder. Because of potassium chromate, it has certain water solubility. Its relative density is 3.65, its refractive index is 1.9, its oil absorption is 11.6%, and its apparent specific volume is 300g/L.
Barium chromate cannot be used as a coloring pigment. Because it contains chromate, it has a similar effect to zinc chrome yellow when used in antirust paint. Barium potassium chromate cannot be used as a coloring pigment, but can only be used as an anti-rust pigment, which can replace part of zinc yellow. From the perspective of development trend, it is only one of the varieties of chromate anti-rust pigments available in the coating industry.
